GenAI for Unreal Engine - AI Image Generation

AI Image Generation in Unreal Engine

AI image generation inside a running game opens up creative possibilities that weren't practical even a year ago. We're not just talking about generating concept art in a separate tool — we mean creating and displaying images at runtime, driven by gameplay.

What Can You Build?

  • Dynamic in-game art. A fantasy RPG where paintings on dungeon walls are generated based on the lore of that specific dungeon. Each playthrough, different art.
  • Player-driven creation. Let players describe what they want — a coat of arms, a ship design, a wanted poster — and generate it live.
  • Procedural textures and props. Generate unique book covers, posters, maps, or environmental details that make the world feel handcrafted without actually hand-crafting thousands of assets.
  • AI-powered photo mode. Let players generate stylized versions of their screenshots using AI image editing.

Available Models

The image generation landscape has matured significantly:

  • OpenAI GPT-Image-1 — High quality, supports editing and transparency. The newest option with excellent prompt following.
  • DALL-E 3 — Strong coherent composition, good for scenes and characters.
  • Google Imagen 4.0 — Google's flagship image model with multiple tiers (standard, ultra, fast).
  • Gemini Nano Banana — Image generation built into the Gemini chat model itself — ask for an image mid-conversation and it generates one.

For Chinese AI providers, Alibaba and Bytedance offer their own image generation models through our GenAI Chinese Models plugin.

Practical Considerations

Resolution and speed. Higher resolutions take longer. For real-time gameplay, 512x512 or 1024x1024 with a loading indicator works well. For menu screens or loading screens, go higher.

Cost per image. Each generation costs API credits. Design your systems to generate when it matters, not on every frame.

Content safety. All major providers have built-in content filtering. Your players won't be generating anything inappropriate through your game.

How to Integrate

GenAI for Unreal handles image generation from OpenAI and Google, returning raw image data you can display as textures in-engine. The async pipeline means generation happens in the background without blocking your game.
